The Story Behind Francis

  • Left Trapped in the Cellar: During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, a little fox terrier was trapped in the wine cellars beneath the Hotel St. Francis. Her devoted owner, wine cellar keeper James Hall, was forced to evacuate in the chaos, and for five long days, the blistering heat made the basement unreachable.

  • A Miraculous Rescue: When Hall was finally able to dig into the cellar ruins, he was overjoyed to find his companion alive under some machinery—weak and thirsty, but miraculously unhurt!

  • A "Boy" Named Francis: At first, everyone assumed the brave little survivor was a boy! After Hall tenderly nursed her back to health, he made the sweet, selfless decision to let her become the hotel's official mascot, where she could be showered with love by everyone.

  • Official Hotel Mascot: Adopted by the hotel manager's wife, she was given the name "Francis" after the hotel and lived out her days as a treasured symbol of hope and resilience during San Francisco’s recovery.
