The Gare d'Orsay served variously as a French station, a postal center for sending packages to prisoners of war during World War II, then, again as a station welcoming home those same prisoners after the Liberation. It was a movie set, a hotel and then scheduled to be demolished. With a government decree, it soon found support amongst politicians and was declared an historic landmark.

Well known for its devotion to the art of the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century, the museum commissioned these lovely artistamps representing a variety of artists:

  • Raboteurs de parquet (Floor Scrapers) - Caillebotte
  • La charmeuse de serpents (The Snake Charmer) - Rousseau
  • L'inondation à Port-Marly (Flood at Port Marly) - Sisley
  • L'Angélus (The Angelus) - Millet
  • Nymphéas bleus (Blue Waterlilies) - Monet
  • Coquelicots; environs d'Argenteuil (Wild Poppies Near Argenteuil) - Monet

Presented in 5 by 6 inches sheets of 6 stamps each, with water-activated adhesive in the fashion of traditional postage. Each artistamp is approximately 1-9/16 by 2 inches.

Please remember that these are faux postes and not to be used to replace the true postage necessary for mailing!
