A lovely image of Mary based on a Baroque painting by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner

The idea of Mary untying knots comes from St Irenaeus of Lyon, France. He drew a parallel between Mary and Eve. The "knot" of Eve's disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. For what Eve had bound by disbelief, Mary had unbound by belief.
