God bestowed grace upon the Blessed Mother Mary that she be born free of original sin because of the merits of her son, Jesus. Catholic theology teaches that we are all born with original sin because of Adam's transgression in the Garden of Eden. Although some evidence of this belief precedes him, St Augustine is considered and furthered the idea around 412 AD. Some protestant religions are true to this belief as well.
