We were quite taken with these wonderful icon-style prints - the detail is gorgeous and the printing superb.
The title, The Secret of the Meal refers to the mystical reality of the first institution of what has become to be known as the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper. Jesus Christ is the central figure in this icon and is the only one who is looking directly at us. Jesus holds his right hand, not straight up as in traditional blessing position, but up-turned and opened as to show how he is offering his very body and blood for food to save all people of good will.
There are 11 pyramid-shaped halves of bread in front of the apostles. The icon artist has also captured the obvious awe, wonder, and confusion that his followers exhibit when Jesus explains to them that it is truly his body to be eaten and his blood to be drunk - and all of this should be done in remembrance of him.
We think this a wonderful addition to an invitation to Christmas or Easter dinner.
The loaves are also a reminder of the meal that Christ shared when he multiplied the loaves and fishes - that the apostles know that they should share their new knowledge and faith.
These lovely holy cards are a bit lighter weight than some others we offer, but the printing is absolutely outstanding. They are a convenient size for use as gifts or bookmarks - measuring 3-1/8 by 4-5/8 inches on heavy cream-colored paper. The back is blank except for a faint colophon at the bottom, leaving plenty of room for custom imprinting with your own message, or a place to write a note to a friend, or to inscribe an appropriate prayer.
